Fantasy, A gaze full of longing

A gaze full of longing—기록한다.

(아래 도표 [Phases of the Gaze] 참조)

Cruel Intimacy:

Wanted.. Or⟫, ⟪Whose⟫, ⟪Whom⟫, ⟪From the.. and⟫—에서도 붕괴가 구현된다.
⟪Want.. Wanted..

Cruel Intimacy:

Longing: Expectation, Belief, Promise, Standard | Loss

Confronted by personal and social anxiety, by the experience of loss and mourning, by my own panic and the depression of others, I have long thought about where these things come from. My work begins in that questioning and inquiry.
My inquiry does not simply reduce things to cause and effect; it moves back and forth between two questions: ‘why’ and ‘owing to what’. These two questions come to rest on the same surface, and that surface was ‘longing’.
Longing is a fundamental element of being human. Its name changes according to where it manifests: it is at times expectation, at times belief, at times promise, and it becomes a standard. Longing may be inherent in the individual, and it equally exists in relationships and in society. It can even be used to explain social phenomena and problems, so strong is the ‘continuity of existence’ it carries, running from the individual to the relationship, and from the relationship to society. My inquiry through the work focuses on how standards derived from longing act upon people and society, and how they structure the world.

Lauren Berlant: The Poetics of Attachment and Apostrophe in Cruel Optimism

When I move between the two questions of ‘why’ and ‘owing to what’, I cannot avoid speaking of Berlant’s Cruel Optimism, because I share her understanding of ‘attachment’. In Berlant’s account, we strike affective bargains over the costs of our attachments, mostly unconsciously, and most of these keep us ‘in proximity to the scene of desire/attrition’.¹ In other words, attachment keeps us lingering near scenes of longing and emotional exhaustion.
Returning once more to scenes of loss and mourning, I thought: perhaps loss is not merely the disappearance of an object, but also the collapse of relationships and possibilities already constructed through expectation. Here, the ‘disappearance of the object’ is the archetype of longing, and the ‘collapse of relationships and possibilities already constructed through expectation’ is likely the social structure formed by standards derived from longing. Going further, a standard derived from longing is not entirely false, but it is closer to an illusion than to a substance. And that illusion becomes a driving force in our lives, functioning as it should.
The habit of lending reality to what is absent arises from longing. It rests on the structure of apostrophe, which Berlant draws from Barbara Johnson’s reading: a counterpart who is affectively present but physically absent is revived within the utterance. Thanks to that absence, the fantasy of an object composed of attributes 𝓍, projected by the speaker, becomes possible, and from it the present moment is made. This structure of utterance is the same as the poetics of attachment. Between the wish to be near 𝓍 and the emotional habitus I have built up, there is always a split. This habitus is a function of possessing 𝓍 – and 𝓍 is absent. Hence between the object, affectively present though absent, and the speaker (the ‘I’), there is always a fissure. That fissure is the reason for the cruelty.²
Longing is shared and repeated beyond the individual and relationships, into society, and becomes conviction. The collective values and myths thus formed grant the force of reality to illusion. I record this structure as a shift in the way of looking – ‘A Gaze Full of Longing’. Through this generative act of granting reality to absence, I perceive and explore the ‘continuity of existence’ of longing.

The Gaze: Observational Stance and Structure

I have divided the gaze full of longing – the generative act of granting reality to absence – into four broad gazes: Primordial Longing, Collective Attachment, Cruel Intimacy and Infinite Impasse. They form a structure that is less a passage from one stage to the next than an entangled cycle. (See the diagram below, Phases of the Gaze.)

The four gazes divide into two stances, according to the stance of the gaze. Primordial Longing and Infinite Impasse belong to the ‘performative stance’; Collective Attachment and Cruel Intimacy belong to the ‘observational stance’. Primordial Longing is a state of perceiving existence, and Infinite Impasse is a state of impasse in which one perceives what remains or is absent. These two gazes sit within the performative stance because they envisage works in which the viewer can directly enact that state of perception. Collective Attachment and Cruel Intimacy are ways of looking that observe the structures and phenomena arising from longing, and so belong to the observational stance. To the two questions of ‘why’ and ‘owing to what’, Collective Attachment answers from a macro perspective and Cruel Intimacy from a micro perspective.
To look structurally, through this generative act, at the relationships and society I have experienced is of a piece with my observational stance toward life.

Cruel Intimacy: Methodological Expression

In the course of the ‘A Gaze Full of Longing’ series, I am currently concentrating my work on Cruel Intimacy. In Cruel Intimacy, I approach longing and its dynamics from a micro perspective.
My painting moves between abstraction and figuration. Within it, two longings point in different directions. The ‘discovered form’, found through chance, is a longing discovered from within; the ‘coded external form’ is a longing imposed from without. In Cruel Intimacy, these two layers seem connected but, owing to absence, end up adrift or isolated, visualising the collapse of relationships and possibilities that arises from longing.
Collapse is also embodied in the titles of the works: Want.. Wanted.. Or, Whose, Whom and From the.. and. Each title breaks its grammar in proportion to the degree of collapse or attachment. Want.. Wanted.. Or is longing adrift: the object of longing, with loss as its axis, collapses in many layers through changes in time and space, and accumulates in a dismantled state. Whose addresses the loss of the ‘subject’ who longs, and Whom the loss of the ‘object’ of longing; each shows a different attitude toward what has been lost. From the.. and is a scene particularly close to Infinite Impasse, in which the object of longing is pursued but never reached. That this work sits, in the diagram, close to Infinite Impasse even within Cruel Intimacy is for this reason.

Cruel Intimacy: Painterly Expression | Pareidolia, Dismantling and Layering, Signs, Light

In my work, the ‘discovered form’ and the ‘coded external form’ entangle and overlap, making a scene that is somehow ‘other’. Forms of different origin repeatedly exchange with one another and appear to join into one, yet at the same time they look like countless unrelated images crossing. The image is never fixed; it dwells between discovery and disappearance, like a scene caught midway through the repetition of coming into being and vanishing.
The act of discovering forms in chance resembles the disposition of longing. After staining the linen, I observe the materiality that emerges, pareidolically, and capture forms. The captured forms are dismantled and layered again and again on the surface, together with collected structures and natural compositions. The surface, so dismantled and layered, is a structure – and a ‘scene’ – in which, through the absence of the object, fantasy and the present it permits become possible. This is how the structure of apostrophe discussed earlier occurs on the surface.
The planes laid over traces that overlap like sedimented time symbolise an arrested sensation that has not wholly disintegrated. Signs such as points and curves can look like topographic maps formed along the traces. Coded external forms give longing its structure. This implies the process by which longing is shared and repeated beyond the individual and relationships, into society, and becomes conviction.
Streaks of light appear in images that lie on the border between uncertainty and certainty, in the repetition of coming into being and vanishing. This borrows the visual grammar of long-exposure photography, in which the movement of light remains as a line. The line has a directionality, pointing at or pursuing something within the picture. The viewer’s eye follows that direction naturally and infers where it will arrive. In my painting, light traces an orbit according to the composition that is read once the ‘scene’ has been painted, and sets the eye in motion.

The Urge to Understand, and Stance

For me, painting is the urge to understand. It is a field for analysing and exploring the complex, contradictory structure of longing, and it is also a means of disclosing, layered together rather than separated, the sense of space and the sense of time that ambiguous forms create.
I do not wish merely to explain this structure dichotomously. I make paintings as a place in which the process by which the structure of longing and attachment operates can be observed, and anxiety and loss reflected upon. In moments when existence emerges within unstable forms, when mythic qualities are revealed, when generation and collapse cross – when loss occurs in the place where expectation and belief, promise and standard once stood – I ask what stance the coexistence of longing, attachment and loss demands of us.
