Artist Note

나는 ‘갈망’에서 파생된 기준이 인간과 사회에 어떻게 작용하고, 세계를 구성하는지 탐구한다.
갈망은 인간에게 본능적이다. 그것은 기대나 믿음으로, 때로는 약속으로 확장된다. 각기 다른 형태로 개인과 집단 속에서 무의식 중에 빠르게 퍼져나간다.

나는 불안과 상실, 자신의 공황과 타인의 우울, 그리고 죽음을 목도하며 그 근원에 대해 생각해왔다. 그리고 한 가지에 도달했다. 상실은 단순히 대상의 소멸뿐만 아니라 기대를 통해 이미 구축된 관계와 가능성의 붕괴이기도 했다. 벌랜트의 말을 빌리자면, “우리는 애착심이 초래하는 대가를 가지고 정동적 거래를 한다. 주로 무의식적으로 이루어지는 그런 거래는 대부분 욕망/마모의 장면에 우리가 가까이 있도록 붙잡아 둔다.” 즉 애착이 우리를 갈망과 정서적 소진의 장면 근처에 머물게 한다는 것이었다.
갈망에서 파생된 기준은 허상에 가깝다. 그렇다고 완벽하게 거짓이거나 환상인 것은 아니다. 이 수많은 기준들이 우리의 삶의 동력으로서도 기능을 하기 때문이다.
부재하는 것에 실재를 부여하려는 습관은 갈망에서 비롯된다. 특정 형상을 반복적으로 노출시킴으로써 그것은 실재하게 된다. 갈망에서 파생된 수많은 기준들은 압축된 정보와 화면으로 노출되어 단편적인 이미지만을 반복적으로 보여준다. 부재하는 것에 화려한 이미지들만 쌓일 때 지각은 마비되기 쉽고 이때 이 구조는 더욱 불안정해진다.

이는 벌랜트가 분석한 돈호법(apostrophe)의 구조에 기대어 있다. 정동적으로는 현존하지만 물리적으로는 부재하는 상대가 발화 속에서 되살아난다는 것이다. 그 부재 덕분에 발화자가 투사한 속성 𝓍로 이루어진 대상이라는 환상이 가능해지고, 그로써 현재라는 순간이 만들어진다. 이 발화의 구조는 애착의 시학과도 같다. 𝓍에 가까이 있기를 바라는 마음과, 내가 구축해 온 감정적 아비투스 사이엔 언제나 분열이 있다. 이 아비투스는 𝓍를 소유하는 것과 함수관계에 있기 때문이다. 그래서 부재하지만 정동적으로는 현존하는 대상과 발화자(‘나’) 사이엔 늘 균열이 있다. 이것이 잔인함의 이유이다.
갈망은 개인과 관계를 넘어 사회로 공유되고 반복되며 신념이 된다. 그렇게 형성된 집단적 가치와 신화는 허상에 실질적인 힘을 부여한다. 나는 이 구조를 ‘시선’의 변화로—염원이 담긴 눈길—기록한다. 부재에 실재를 부여하는 생성적 행위를 통해 나는 자연화된 신화와 신념이 어떻게 인식되고 재해석될 수 있는지 질문한다.

나의 작업은 우연에서 형상을 발견하는 프로세스 기반 추상회화의 전통을 잇는다. 다만 그 계보가 비판 받아온 지점—내용의 공백—에서는 벗어나고자 한다.
애도를 언어화하는 방식에서 나는 Dominique Knowles와 맞닿아 있다. 다만 나의 애도는 실제 상실을 넘어 허상의 기준으로까지 확장된다는 점에서 차이점이 있다. 또한 보이지 않는 구조나 힘, 혹은 관계를 시각적 기호나 지형적 흔적으로 도출하는 방식에서 Emma McNally와 John De Cesare(특히 그의 후기 작업)와도 닮아있다.
이 위치에서 내가 지속해온 것은, 약해진 지각에 힘을 기르는 태도였다. 이것은 신체를 움직이는 일과 같았다. 감각에 집중하고 변화를 발견하는 것—이 태도는 내가 상실과 불안에 대처하는 방식이었다.

나는 이 태도를 회화로 옮겨온다. 의도와 우연의 경계에서 린넨을 염색하고, 드러난 물성을 파레이돌리아적으로 관찰하며 형상을 발견한다. 나의 작업은 추상과 구상의 경계를 오간다. 코드화된 외부적 형태와 발견된 형태—두 층위를 통해 갈망의 역학을 인지하고 탐구하는 과정을 수행한다.
이 과정은 네 개의 응시—⟪원초적 갈망 Primordial Longing⟫, ⟪집단적 애착 Collective Attachment⟫, ⟪잔인한 친밀함 Cruel Intimacy⟫, ⟪무한한 교착 Infinite Impasse⟫—로 구성되며, 이들은 순차적으로 지나가는 것이 아니라 서로 얽히어 순환한다. 이 네 응시는 두 축에서 갈린다. 원초적 갈망과 무한한 교착은 각각 존재를 인지하는 상태와 잔존 혹은 부재하는 것을 인지하는 상태로, '수행적 태도'로 나뉜다. 집단적 애착과 잔인한 친밀함은 시선의 거리감으로 구분되어 '관찰적 태도'로 나뉜다. 코드화된 형태와 발견된 형태는 각각 밖에서 부과된 갈망과 안에서 발견된 갈망이다. 집단적 애착은 부과와 발견이 연결 혹은 반복되어 보다 상황적이고 관계적인 서사를 만든다. 잔인한 친밀함은 부과와 발견이 연결된 듯하나 부재로 인해 부유하거나 고립되면서 관계나 가능성의 붕괴를 시각화한다.
⟪Cruel Intimacy⟫ 단계의 Want.. Wanted.. Or #2에서, 시간의 퇴적처럼 겹쳐진 흔적 위로 얹혀진 면은 완전히 와해되지 않은 정지된 감각을 상징한다. 점과 곡선은 흔적을 따라 형성된 지형적 지도처럼 보이지만, 이미지의 부재로 인해 불확실함과 확실함의 경계에 있을 뿐이다. 이는 결국, 대상의 부재가 바로 그 환상과 그것이 허락하는 현재를 가능하게 하는 구조—벌랜트가 명명한 바로 그 구조—를 내포한다.
나는 이것을 인과로 환원하기보다 ‘왜’와 ‘무엇으로 인해’라는 두 질문을 같은 표면 위에 공존시킨다. 회화는 이 모호한 형상들이 만드는 공간감과 시간감을 분리되지 않고 겹쳐진 채로 드러내는 수단이 된다.
같은 원리로 제목에서도, “염원이 담긴 눈길”의 중첩적이면서도 순환적인 구조에 따라, 나는 심리적 붕괴의 정도를 언어적 문법의 붕괴로 병치시킨다. 서로 다른 원단 혹은 방법적인 시도들은 제목과 구조가 따르는 붕괴를 시각적으로 드러낸다.

나는 이 메커니즘을 단순히 설명하는 것이 아니라, 갈망과 애착의 구조가 작동하는 과정을 관찰하고 불안과 상실을 성찰할 수 있는 장으로서 회화를 창작한다.
불안정한 형태 안에서 존재가 출현하는 순간들, 신화적인 성질이 드러나는 순간들, 생성과 붕괴가 교차하는 이 과정 속에서 판단을 유보한 채 갈망과 애착, 상실의 공존이 우리에게 요구하는 태도가 무엇인지 질문을 던진다.

My work explores how standards derived from longing act upon the human and the social, and how they construct the world.
Longing is instinctive to human beings. It expands into expectation, into belief, sometimes into promise. In different forms, it spreads quickly through the individual and the collective, beneath conscious awareness.

Witnessing anxiety and loss — my own panic, others' depression, and death itself — I have thought about their root. I arrived at one thing: loss is not simply the disappearance of an object, but the collapse of a relation and a possibility already built through expectation. As Berlant writes: we conduct affective transactions on the terms attachment dictates — largely unconscious transactions that keep us close to the scene of our own desire and wearing-out. Attachment, in other words, keeps us near the scene of our own longing and exhaustion.
Standards derived from longing are close to illusion. Yet they are not entirely false, either — because these very standards also function as the drive of our lives.
The habit of granting reality to what is absent originates in longing. By exposing a certain form repeatedly, that form becomes real. Standards derived from longing are delivered through compressed information and screens, showing only fragmented images, again and again. When only glamorous images accumulate around what is absent, perception is easily numbed, and the structure becomes further destabilised.

This rests on the structure of apostrophe as Berlant analyses it. An addressee who is affectively present but physically absent is brought back to life within the speech act. Thanks to that absence, a fantasy made of the qualities 𝓍 projected by the speaker becomes possible, and through this, a present moment is manufactured. This structure of address is akin to what Berlant calls the poetics of attachment: there is always a split between the wish to remain near 𝓍 and the affective habitus I have built. This habitus stands in a functional relation to possessing 𝓍. And so, between the object that is absent yet affectively present, and the speaker — "I" — there is always a rupture. This is the reason it is cruel.
Longing extends beyond the individual and the relational into the social, where it is shared, repeated, and hardens into belief. The collective values and myths formed this way lend real force to illusion. I record this structure as a shift of the gaze — what I call A Gaze Full of Longing. Through the generative act of granting reality to what is absent, I ask how naturalised myths and beliefs can be recognised and reinterpreted.

My work continues the tradition of process-based abstract painting, which discovers form out of chance. But it seeks to depart from the point for which that lineage has been criticised — a hollowness of content.
In the way I put mourning into language, I find myself close to Dominique Knowles, though my mourning differs in that it extends beyond actual loss into illusory standards. My work also resembles that of Emma McNally and John De Cesare — particularly his later work — in the way it draws out invisible structures, forces, or relations as visual signs or topographic traces.
What I have sustained from this position is an attitude of building strength in a perception grown weak. This was akin to moving the body. Concentrating on sensation, discovering change — this was how I coped with loss and anxiety.

I bring this attitude into painting. I dye linen at the boundary between intention and chance, observing the material that surfaces and discovering form through a pareidolic gaze. My work moves between abstraction and figuration. Through two layers — coded, external form and discovered form — I carry out a process of recognising and exploring the dynamics of longing.
This process unfolds across four gazes—⟪Primordial Longing⟫, ⟪Collective Attachment⟫, ⟪Cruel Intimacy⟫, ⟪Infinite Impasse⟫—which do not proceed sequentially but entangle and recur. These four gazes divide along two axes. Primordial Longing and Infinite Impasse are distinguished by a performative stance: one recognises existence coming into being, the other recognises what remains or is absent. Collective Attachment and Cruel Intimacy are distinguished by the distance of the gaze, an observational stance. Coded form and discovered form are, respectively, longing imposed from without and longing found from within. In Collective Attachment, imposition and discovery are bound or repeated, producing a narrative that is more situational and relational. In Cruel Intimacy, imposition and discovery appear bound, yet drift apart or grow isolated through absence, rendering visible the collapse of a relation and the possibility it once held.
In Want.. Wanted.. Or #2, from the Cruel Intimacy phase, a field laid over traces layered like sediments of time stands for a stillness that never fully collapses. Dots and curves seem to trace a topographic map along these traces, yet the absence of the image leaves it caught only between certainty and doubt. This, in the end, holds the very structure Berlant names — one where the absence of the object is precisely what makes the fantasy, and the present moment it grants, possible.
Rather than reducing this to causation, I let the questions "why" and "by what" coexist on the same surface. Painting becomes the means by which these ambiguous forms reveal the sense of space and time they generate — layered, un-separated.
The same principle governs my titles. Following the overlapping, cyclical structure of A Gaze Full of Longing, I juxtapose degrees of psychological collapse with the collapse of grammar itself. Different fabrics, different methods — these visually reveal the collapse that title and structure follow.

I make paintings not to explain this mechanism, but as a field in which to observe the workings of longing and attachment, and to reflect on loss and anxiety.
In moments where unstable forms give rise to presence, where something mythic surfaces, where formation and collapse cross — suspending judgement, I ask what attitude the coexistence of longing, attachment, and loss demands of us.
