Fantasy, A Gaze Full of Longing

I investigate how human beings construct the world by attributing a sense of reality to absence. I understand this phenomenon through the mechanisms of expectation and belief, not as mere emotions, but as fundamental structures that enable relationships with that which does not exist.

I define this state of perception as a "Gaze Full of Longing." It is a generative act that draws absence into the present and grants reality to what does not exist. Through this gaze, I observe a continuous cycle ranging from the emergence of expectation to attachment and loss.

These stages are not sequential but overlapping states of perception—much like how grief does not move linearly through its stages, longing too can inhabit collective attachment and cruel intimacy simultaneously. I distinguish them here as a way of articulating what is otherwise felt as one continuous, undivided sensation. My current practice dwells primarily within collective attachment and cruel intimacy, where attachment has not yet hardened into loss, but already carries its weight.

This inquiry originates from repeated encounters with loss and death. I understand loss not simply as the disappearance of an object, but as the collapse of relationships and possibilities already constructed through expectation. In this process, anxiety and attachment simultaneously sustain and destabilize the presence of the other.

Expectation, however, does not remain within the individual. It is shared and repeated through relationships and social environments, expanding into belief. Such beliefs form collective values, promises, ideals, and myths, granting real influence to what does not exist. In this sense, the attribution of reality to absence is not a personal illusion, but a fundamental way in which society constructs the world. I am interested in how such naturalized structures of myth and belief can be recognized and reinterpreted.

More recently, I have extended this inquiry into the act of painting itself. By staining linen with acrylic ink and searching for form within the resulting abstraction—a process akin to pareidolia—I let the same longing that structures my subject matter also structure my method. The image is no longer only depicted; it is discovered, in the same way expectation discovers presence within absence.

This same logic extends to the titles of the works. I treat the grammatical collapse of a title as a counterpart to the psychological collapse of each gaze. Within collective attachment, titles still carry traces of a language reaching to connect—looking back on a completed act, as in That We Held, or suspended in a tense that holds off an approaching separation, as in Not Yet Apart. By cruel intimacy, this grammar collapses entirely: a pronoun left hanging without an object, as in Whom, or a verb that slides from present to past to conjunction without ever resolving, as in Want.. Wanted.. Or—language itself performing the loss of what longing once reached toward. Yet within infinite impasse, this collapse does not end in total dissolution. A preposition indicating direction remains without its object, held in place by an adverb of duration, as in Toward, Still. And among these fragments, one word alone remains whole: Lingering. It marks the point where language, rather than disappearing entirely, persists in another form. The titles thus repeat, at the level of grammar, the same cycle the paintings enact—generation and collapse, and a return in altered form.

For me, painting is not a tool to explain this mechanism, but a field in which its operation can be observed and reflected upon. I explore moments in which existence emerges within unstable forms, revealing the mythological and sublime qualities of images. Within these processes, where generation and collapse intersect, attachment becomes unstable. Through the notion of a "Gaze Full of Longing," I continue to investigate how humans attribute reality to absence, and how they live within such constructed worlds.

나는 인간이 부재에 실재감을 부여함으로써 세계를 구성하는 방식을 탐구한다. 이 현상을 단순한 감정이 아니라, 존재하지 않는 것과 관계 맺게 하는 근본적인 구조 — 기대와 신념의 메커니즘으로 이해한다.

나는 이러한 지각 상태를 ‘염원이 담긴 눈길'이라 정의한다. 이는 부재를 현재로 끌어들이고, 존재하지 않는 것에 실재감을 부여하는 생성적 행위다. 이 응시를 통해 나는 기대의 발생에서부터 애착과 상실에 이르는 하나의 연속된 순환을 관찰한다.

이 단계들은 순차적이지 않고 중첩된다 — 애도가 정해진 순서로 진행되지 않듯, 갈망 역시 “집단적 애착”과 “잔인한 친밀함”을 동시에 통과할 수 있다. 나는 이를 네 개로 구분했지만, 이는 하나의 미분화된 감각을 설명하기 위한 방편에 가깝다. 지금 내 작업은 주로 애착이 아직 상실로 굳어지지 않았지만, 이미 그 무게를 품고 있는 지점인, “집단적 애착”과 “잔인한 친밀함" 사이에 머문다.

이 탐구는 상실과 죽음을 반복적으로 마주한 경험에서 비롯되었다. 나는 상실을 단순히 대상의 소멸이 아니라, 기대를 통해 이미 구축된 관계와 가능성의 붕괴로 이해한다. 이 과정에서 불안과 애착은 타자의 존재를 동시에 지탱하고 또 불안정하게 만든다.

그러나 기대는 개인 안에 머물지 않는다. 그것은 관계와 사회적 환경을 통해 공유되고 반복되며 신념으로 확장된다. 이러한 신념은 집단적 가치, 약속, 이상, 신화를 형성하며, 존재하지 않는 것에 실질적인 영향력을 부여한다. 이런 의미에서 부재에 실재감을 부여하는 행위는 개인적 착각이 아니라, 사회가 세계를 구성하는 근본적인 방식이다. 나는 이렇게 자연화된 신화와 신념의 구조가 어떻게 인식되고 재해석될 수 있는지에 관심이 있다.

최근에는 이 탐구를 회화 행위 자체로 확장했다. 린넨을 아크릴 잉크로 물들이고, 그 추상적인 얼룩 속에서 형상을 찾아나가는 과정 — 파레이돌리아에 가까운 이 방식을 통해, 나는 주제를 구성하는 갈망이 작업 방식 자체로 구성하도록 둔다. 이미지는 더 이상 그려지는 것이 아니라 발견되는 것이다. 기대가 부재 속에서 존재를 발견하듯이.

이러한 원리는 작품의 제목에도 동일하게 적용된다. 나는 각 응시의 단계가 지나는 심리적 붕괴의 정도를, 제목을 구성하는 문법의 붕괴로 병치시킨다. “집단적 애착”의 단계에서 제목은 아직 관계를 잇고자 하는 언어의 흔적을 지닌다 — “그날 우리가 붙잡았던 것(That We Held)"처럼 이미 지나간 행위를 돌아보거나, "아직은, 떨어지지 않은(Not Yet Apart)"처럼 다가올 이별을 유예한 채 버티는 시제로 나타난다. “잔인한 친밀함”의 단계에 이르면 이 문법은 완전히 무너진다. 목적어를 갖지 못한 채 허공에 남겨진 대명사("누구를, Whom")나, 현재에서 과거로, 다시 접속사로 미끄러지며 끝내 완결되지 못하는 동사("원한다.. 원했었다.. 혹은, Want.. Wanted.. Or")처럼, 언어 스스로가 갈망이 향할 대상을 잃어버린 상태를 수행한다. 그러나 “무한한 교착”의 단계에 이르러 이 붕괴는 완전한 소멸로 끝나지 않는다. 방향을 지시하는 전치사는 목적어 없이 남겨진 채로도 지속을 뜻하는 부사와 함께 머문다("여전히, 그쪽을 향해, Toward, Still"). 그리고 그 파편들 사이로, 유일하게 온전한 형태를 지닌 하나의 단어가 남는다 — "머무름(Lingering)". 이는 언어가 완전히 붕괴되지 않고, 처음과는 다른 형태로 다시 지속됨을 뜻한다. 제목은 이렇게 이미지가 수행하는 것과 동일한 순환 — 생성과 붕괴, 그리고 다른 모습으로의 재귀 — 을 문법의 층위에서 되풀이한다.

나에게 회화는 이 메커니즘을 설명하는 도구가 아니라, 그것이 작동하는 과정을 관찰하고 성찰할 수 있는 장이다. 나는 불안정한 형태 안에서 존재가 출현하는 순간들, 이미지가 지닌 신화적이고 숭고한 성질이 드러나는 순간들을 탐구한다. 생성과 붕괴가 교차하는 이 과정 속에서 애착은 불안정해진다. '염원이 담긴 눈길'이라는 개념을 통해, 나는 인간이 어떻게 부재에 실재감을 부여하며 그렇게 구성된 세계 안에서 살아가는지를 계속해서 탐구한다.
